JOSEE NOTES - depicts the ideology of perspective through the two characters - contrasting lifestyles - josee spent all her time inside, on her wheelchair due to her paralysis - unable to function her muscles from her torso down, prevents from being able to walk - in comparison, tsuneo has all the freedom to do as he desired - josee had no freedom, prevented from leaving because josee was taught that everyone in the world were like tigers - josee rebellious personality due to wanting freedom - josee wanted to swim along with the sea animals, like a mermaid; metaphorical - josee and tsuneo breathing the same air, completely different worlds - lack of sympathy - one must see through the perspective of the other to understand the pain and the emotions someone is feeling within themselves - when tsuneo gets injured, temporarily loses the ability to walk due to saving josee - his offer to mexico slowly fades away in the meantime he is recovering, on the verge of losing his dream - only then does he realise losing his ability to walk and his freedom is essentially taking away his dream - the perspective that he had before, vs after, compeltely different to his own vision - placed into josee's position of physical body control - understands her position - putting yourself in the place of someone else is the only way to truly understand how someone else feels - being selfless requires courage - never be afraid to care for someone else - studio bones; beautiful animation - music produced by eve - romance aspect well portrayed - the animation, the music, the narrative - compelled by romance - reflect on the morals the anime intended to teach you - don't take the things you can do for granted - follow your dreams and help others do the same - the discrimination of disabled people - naturally present in the movie - worse in japan than in america; was not necessarily overdone, not too# in your face - about a college student who becomes a caretaker for a crippled girl - expand about the trials and tribulations of being disabled and afraid to following your dreams and never stopping despite what happens - unlike most other works in this drama full of melodrama, josee stands apart - very real, real characters, experiencing human problems - relatively small cast of characters - the two leads, tsuneo josee, hayato and mai, josee's friend kana,josee's grandmother chizu - by the end of the film, hayato always looking out for his friends in bg - because he was watching them, giving the push they need, fun and loving; there when it truly matters, atune to people's feelings - chizu overprotective of her daughter, lives in a world that sees the disabled as lesser people, the first to be happy when she sees josee breaking out of her shell; her passing was natural. she was old,and she died. the scene was quiet mourned her passing with tsuneo by her side - not made with the intent to make you cry - to show raw emotions of someone with a disability, and the people around her - mai, the co-worker and other love interest, she pleads with josee to release tsuneo and allow him to follow his dream; implying that is was impossible to have actual feelings for josee as she was disabled - mai, in this position, is the reminder that this is just how some people treat the disabled - as if they are to be constantly pitied and to be helped - fixates on sheltered upbringing; tsuneo recognises that she is not weak - sees as another girl who has big dreams and encourages her to not give up on them - tsuneo was an angel with the wings in his heart - when tsuneo's dream was stripped, he starts to lose his way - mai realises she was wrong, and evolves and tells josee that she is the only one who can show tsuneo the way - after working together with kana, josee puts together a childrens picture book - hayato takes tsuneo out of the posital to josees first live reading - josee created book all on her own - fighting to proceed with her dream against all odds and being told to be realisitc by someone more miserable than her - reads the picture book, tsuneo may have had his wings injured, still had wings in his heart - josee, thorugh her book, relayed that she did not want him to give up, and wanted to see him reach for his dream - one character expressing how another changed her life, does not want that person to give up now - drives message to not give up on your dreams; even if it seems impossible in the present - have a lifetime to make your dreams come true - the movie drove home the message of following your dreams, and helping and supporting others - with his wings, he encouraged josee - choosing to move forward with your dreams - following your passion, not taking things for granted - minor pacing issues - beginning feeling rushed - overall fantastic experience - music excellently done by evan cole - tracks fit the scenes they are in, setting the scene without standing out more than necessary - accompany the beautiful scenes it attends - animation enhances the story told - a silent voice and josee approach living with disabilities in fairly different ways and have narratively different focal points - fairly difficult to tell a story in an hour and thirty minutes - josee tells a larger than life dramatic romance underpinned with the beauty of its soundtrack and succinct animation courtesy of studio bones - josees world isnt built with her in mind - her life is encompassed by things she can and cant do - she forfeited a lot of her freedom, not by choice - elevators are a rare mirage, the fleeting feeling of thinking you can go to places, the downpour of emotions after realising that you canot, helplesness, being a nuisance to passengers and employees, needing help and aid whenever you go out, the scorns you get when you try to travel on your own - fears the movie managed to paint in your mind - josee cannot navigate without dragging herself around, needs help to get to anything high up, her wheelchair cannot be used in the house - the idea that prior abuse caused her grandmother to make josee reliant on her did more harm than good, portrayed with utmost clarity - josee becomes a self-sufficient mermaid - paraplegic; disability is not shown to us - tsuneo aids her to become more fulfilled with her life - showed that disabled people do not need pity - need people that care about her - movie wants us to understand josee's struggles and emptahise with her - trying to be compassionate sometimes come off as crass, robbing someone of htheir freedom - being pitied on is not a good feeling - message shown through the movie - tsuneo helped her to do things, not do things - difference - allows josee to learn and enjoy things she could not do before - josee realises her opportunities she thought were limited were actually self defense mechanisms put in place to protect herself - josee reintegrates herself into society - josee did not have a choice in losing the function of her legs - tsuneo calls her behaviour a nuisance due to her behaviour at the start of the movie - the art was kept realistic - served the purpose of accentuating situations, visual storytelling and cues - soft lineart along with colourful diverse pallette - allowed for dynamic facial expressions - the toned cityscape of osaka felt different and unique with a feeling of nostalgia and sentimentality flowing from it compliment the gentle crescendo of storytelling - light compositions used in a beautifully creative way - josee visits beach the suns out, use of bright, soft hues, contrast to when she feels as though she has lost everything - greyscale, drained and washed colours with rain downpouring - lighting can bring certain aspects to scenes - atmospheric noises that brings to life the immersion of emotions - also pure silence, allows us to dwell on the characters thoughts in the scenes - josee voiced by kayo kiyohara, kansai accent laced with emotions - certain narrative points forced onto the audience - the love triangle, the on-the-nose accident after josee stating that the healthy would not be able to understand - the movie is about dreams - to get the dream you want, you cannot just give up - josee was a land bound mermaid that found her sea in tsuneo - through their mutual love, they separated to acheve their dreams, then banded back together - love helps you achieve your dreams
